RA Selection Day 8 Beyond

RA Selection Day 8 Beyond On Selection Day 8 (Thursday), I wore a skinny tie, and worked with Mari and Prof. Patrick Henry Winston. Winston is what we at MIT call a lifer he received 3 degrees from MIT (SB 65, SM 67, PhD 70) and was the Director of the MIT Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (AI Lab) for 25 years. He was the undergrad academic/research advisor for three of my friends, all on their way to Doctorates in AI. He also wrote the text book I used for 1.00: Introduction to Computers and Engineering Problem Solving and teaches 6.034: Artificial Intelligence. I think its pretty cool that faculty are involved with the admissions process. Many noted MIT professors have helped to select the freshman class while Ive been involved, such as Wolfgang Ketterle and Don Sadoway (among many others). The following day (Friday), I did not wear a tie for the first time in more than a week. Yes, the regular action selection committee for domestic applicants has ended. I spent much of the day discussing and planning for MITs new viewbook, as well as preparing for Campus Preview Weekend. You might ask, so selection is over, why cant I have my decision? What happens now? Well, as youve read, there is randomness built into our admissions process, from the reading to the selection subcommittees. The final step ensures consistency and fairness: all of the decisions are reviewed by a small team lead by Dean Marilee Jones. The vast majority of decisions from the selection room will be upheld; some decisions will be changed (one way or the other) if they seem inconsistent with the process. This is a good thing for you, one more way that we make sure there are no mistakes, and that everything is appropriately considered. In parallel, the international process continues. Next weekend, well do international selection, sure to be extremely difficult. As I have previously written, the international admissions is extremely rigorous. Ive been reviewing international applications all day, and I must say I am impressed. Even for those of you for whom we dont have enough room for at MIT, I know youll be a big success wherever you end up. Another process that continues in parallel is the financial aid process. For those of you applying for financial aid which I assume is most of you Daniels blog is required reading. In short, lots going on as we race toward the mailing of decision letters in mid-March

For these women to have to enter the war field without any previous preparation for what was to come, it shows how brave they must have been. Without these women, many soldiers may have died from diseases and other things. Peggy Brase Seigel wrote this article to show how big of an impact women in Indiana, but also women in general, had on the Civil War. Because so many historians have largely excluded these women, they have not been recognized for the hardships they endured and the risks they faced entering the war zone. Seigel includes many names of the women who helped in the war efforts as nurses to give them the recognition they deserve. Seigel did an excellent job in accomplishing her goals for writing this article with all of the descriptions and details she provides about these women nurses and the thing they endured throughout their time serving in the war.

Unusual festivals in Spain La Tomatina La Tomatina is a food fight festival held on the last Wednesday of August each year in the town of Bunol near Valencia in Spain. Thousands of people make their way from all corners of the world to fight in this ‘World’s Biggest Food Fight’ where more than one hundred metric tons of over-ripe tomatoes are thrown in the streets. The week-long festival features music, parades, dancing, and fireworks. Anywhere from 20,000 to 40,000 people come to this huge tomato fight, greatly expanding Bunol’s normal 9,000 person population. At around 11 am, the first event of the Tomatina begins. Many trucks haul the bounty of tomatoes into the center of the town, Plaza del Pueblo. The tomatoes come from Extremadura, where they are less expensive. Technically the festival does not begin until one brave soul has climbed to the top of a two-story high, greased-up wooden pole and reached the coveted ham at the top. In practice this process takes a long time and the festival starts despite no one reaching the meaty prize. The signal for the beginning of the fight is firing of water cannons, and the chaos begins. Once it begins, the battle is generally every man for himself. Those who partake in this event are strongly encouraged to wear protective safety goggles and gloves. In addition, they must squish the tomatoes before throwing for safety precautions. Another rule is that no one is allowed to bring into this fight anything that may provoke someone into a more serious brawl, such as a glass bottle. Although it is forbidden to tear someone else’s clothing, the crowd tends to ignore this and invariably will rip the shirt of any clothed person, man or woman. After exactly one hour, the fighting ends when the water cannons are fired once more to signal the end. At this point, no more tomatoes can be thrown. The cleaning process involves the use of fire trucks to spray down the streets, with water provided from a Roman aqueduct. The authorities seem more concerned with cleaning the town than cleaning the visitors, so some people find water at the Bunol River to wash themselves, although some kind residents will hose passers-by down. Once the tomato pulp is flushed, the ground is clean due to the acidity of the tomato. The festival is in honor of the town’s patron saints, Luis Bertran and the Mare de Deu dels Desemparats (Mother of God of the Defenseless), a title of the Virgin Mary. The tomato fight has been a strong tradition in Bunol since 1944 or 1945. No one is completely certain how this event originated. Possible theories on how the Tomatina began include a local food fight among friends, a juvenile class war, a volley of tomatoes from bystanders at a carnival parade, a practical joke on a bad musician, and the anarchic aftermath of an accidental lorry spillage. One of the most popular theories is that disgruntled townspeople attacked city councilmen with tomatoes during a town celebration. Whatever happened to begin the tradition, it was enjoyed so much that it was repeated the next year, and the year after that, and so on.
